Sally Phillips elected President of FLorida GLBT Democratic Caucus Back
On February 26, 2011 the Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus elected their new leadership team. The elections took place at the annual Winter Conference held in Tallahassee, Florida. The conference, titled Progress & Pride in the Capital, was hosted by the Capital City GLBTA Democratic Caucus, a chapter of the Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus. Guest speakers included Congressman Allen Boyd, Tallahassee City Commissioner Andrew Gillum, Leon County Commissioner Kristin Dozier, and State Representative Michelle Rehwinkel-Vasilinda.
“I am honored and humbled at the trust you have put in me to have elected me your President” said Sally Phillips after being elected President of the Democratic organization, “but I will not be doing this alone.”
Other positions filled through this election were Vice President Terry Fleming, Treasurer Marilyn Cappiello, Secretary Karlene Kos, Communications Director Bobby Poth , Membership Director Robert Prather, Legislative Director Michael Rajner, and Campaign Director Ron Mills. The new leadership will serve two-year terms and were voted in by the members.
Phillips continued by saying to attendees “I look forward to seeing the Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus reach new heights through expanding membership, building diversity within the organization, and building a presence in all 67 counties throughout Florida.” There are seven (7) regions spreading from Pensacola to Key West, with four directors in each region who are fully equipped and empowered to help Phillips achieve her vision of forming chapters in all of Florida’s counties.
“In the name of being inclusive and respectful to all”, Phillips made her first official suggestion that the Florida Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Democratic Caucus change it’s name to the Florida Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Allied Democratic Caucus, specifically citing that she would like to see the organization "outreaching to the Black and the Hispanic communities".
