St. Pete Pride Gives to The Trevor Project Back
August 23, 2011
On the day that the Tampa Bay Rays, along with members of the Tampa Bay LGBT community join together to film an “It Gets Better” video, St. Pete Pride is happy to announce that it has donated $1,040.72 to The Trevor Project’s $13,000 for Trevor’s 13th Birthday fundraising campaign.
“The two go hand in hand,” says Executive Director Chris Rudisill. “It is important to our organization that we reach out to not only assist organizations that help LGBT young people, but to also make a statement to them that life gets better. The LGBT suicide rates among young people are horrific and we must work together to help prevent these numbers from continuing to rise.”
The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender youth. Their mission is clear – to end suicide among LGBTQ youth by providing life-saving and life-affirming resources including a nationwide, 24/7 crisis intervention lifeline, digital community and advocacy/educational programs that create a safe, supportive and positive environment for everyone.
Who is Trevor? “Trevor is the 1994 Academy Award-winning film about a gay 13 year-old boy who, when rejected by friends because of his sexuality, makes an attempt to take his life. The films’ creators founded The Trevor Project after discovering there was nowhere for youth like Trevor to turn in times of crisis. The Trevor Lifeline took its first call 13 years ago, ago on August 8, 1998. Since then, The Trevor Project has answered over 200,000 calls. - www.thetrevorproject.org
The money donated comes from St. Pete Pride’s 2011 Tropical Wave Silent Auction, which was held on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Push Ultra
Lounge in downtown St. Petersburg. The annual event is billed as “Florida’s anti-black tie event” and features vacations, artwork, collectibles, concert tickets and more up for silent auction. A portion of the night’s proceeds benefited The Trevor Project. In 2010, the event helped to raise funds for The Dali Museum’s building project.
