Steve Kornell Proclaims Equal Pay Day! Back
St. Petersburg, FL, April 2011] – On behalf of the City of St. Petersburg, City Councilman Steve Kornell will proclaim Tuesday, April 12, 2011 as Equal Pay Day at the annual “Unhappy Hour” event held by Business and Professional Women/St. Petersburg-Pinellas (BPW).
BPW will hold the group’s annual “Unhappy Hour” in recognition of Equal Pay Day on Tuesday, April 12, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at The Studio@620 located at 620 1st Avenue South in St. Petersburg. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be served; a cash bar will be available. The public is invited. There is no cost to attend and no RSVP is necessary.
Equal Pay Day, which this year falls on April 12, marks the day the average woman in the United States finally earns the same amount of pay that her male counterpart earned in the previous calendar year. According to statistics released in 2010 by the U.S. Census Bureau, women on average earn 77 cents for every dollar paid to their male counterparts. Therefore, if a man were paid $50,000 to perform his job from January 1 through December 31, 2010, it will take a woman in the same position, on average, from January 1, 2010, through April 12, 2011, to earn the same amount.
