UUC to Hold Dream sabbath Event "A Campaign for Compassion and Justice" Back

Unitarian Universalists of Clearwater Take Part In DREAM Sabbath, “A Campaign for Compassion and Justice”

Clearwater, FL –  Unitarian Universalists of Clearwater (UUC) will hold its DREAM Sabbath campaign event on Sunday, October 9th, beginning at 9:30 a.m.  Featured will be a DREAM eligible youth and Adriana Dinis, with Gulf Coast Legal Services (GCLS).  GCLS provides specialized legal services for certain immigrant children who may be eligible for legal status. She will talk about the 2011 DREAM Act and how its passage would help her in her work.  Her personal experiences with these children and those of a local eligible youth will help put the immigration debate into perspective.

The event is free and open to the public. On a press call Wednesday, September 21, UUC Senior Minister, Rev. Abhi Janamanchi, and other representatives from Florida communities of faith kicked-off DREAM Sabbath as a part of a nationwide effort to urge leaders in Congress and Florida to pass the DREAM Act.  (See below to order a copy.)

Last year, the DREAM Act came a mere five votes short of passage in the U.S. Senate, and now faith communities are uniting with DREAM eligible youth to once again sound the clarion call of compassion and justice and push for immigration policies that do not unfairly punish youth for the acts of their parents. Speakers on the call highlighted the seven upcoming events in Florida, part of the national DREAM Sabbath campaign that features 300 + events in 45 states across the nation.

During October in Florida and throughout the nation, a diverse array of religious communities across the theological and ideological spectrum will offer prayers in support of the DREAM Act and lift up the personal stories of young people in their own communities who would benefit from the DREAM Act.According to Rev. Abhi Janamanchi, Unitarian Universalists of Clearwater, FL, “As Unitarian Universalists, we pray and continue to advocate in partnership with other faith communities so that the Senate will pass the DREAM Act and open the door to citizenship for these young people, to rejoice in the possibilities that these young people offer, and to help to reunite families, not tear them apart.” He added, “As Unitarian Universalists we are committed to the passage of the DREAM Act because we believe in the inherent dignity and worth of all people and uphold family unity as beneficial to the health and well-being of society as a whole.”
