When we designed this site, we knew we wanted something different, something that you wouldn't see anywhere else. Something that showed our audience that we know they are smart, sophisticated and appreciate the best. The art we choose for the background was no exception. We chose the work of an artist close to home.
The background art is a digital reproduction of an abstract painting by Janis Jo Stevens. Our graphic designer then pulled colors out of the painting to create a more sophisticated and subtle reinterpretation of the rainbow flag colors.
Janis Stevens has been doing portraits for twenty years professionally. She has a Master of Science in Art Education from Florida International University and taught art in the Monroe County School system for ten years. As much as she loved teaching it left little time to do her own work so for the last two years she has concentrated on painting in oil and sculpting.
In the last few years she has concentrated on figurative sculpture in clay and added life sized three dimensional portraits to her repertoire.
In 1987 Janis Stevens came to Key West from Massachusetts to do an art show and decided to stay trading her snow skis for scuba diving equipment.
